For the past sixteen years, over 200 events involving new music, jazz, world music, interactive electronics, improvisation and interdisciplinary art forms that incorporate sound have been featured in the EMIT series.  EMIT (a registered nonprofit arts organization) brings adventurous music and educational activities to the Tampa Bay are.

EMIT is a recipient of programming awards from from Chamber Music America, ASCAP and the Doris Duke Charitable Foundation.  It is supported by the City of St. Petersburg.

Antonio Adolfo & O Som Do Jazz

SPC Jazz Festival - Jazz Brasil!

It's an evening of Brazilian jazz with the legendary Antonio Adolfo and local band O Som Do Jazz. O Som Do Jazz opens, followed by Antonio solo, then with O Som Do Jazz members.

Antonio Adolfo is a man of many significant accomplishments in the world of music. Stevie Wonder, Earl Klugh, Nara Leao, Wilson Simonal, Ivete Sangalo, Leci Brandao, Emilio Santiago, Beth Carvalho, Sergio Mendes & Brasil '66, Herb Alpert and Dionne Warwick - have all performed or recorded his compositions. His compositions and production work are mainstays in Brazilian television and film. As an award-winning pianist, Antonio Adolfo is among the elite of Rio de Janeiro's jazz scene where his talent was nurtured with the Bossa Nova movement of the 1960s. As a young man, he toured with legendary Brazilian singers, including Elis Regina and Milton Nascimento.

Tatsuya Nakatani (percussion) is originally from Osaka, Japan. He has created his own instrumentation, effectively inventing many instruments and extended techniques. He utilizes drumset, bowed gongs, cymbals, singing bowls, metal objects, bells, and various sticks and bows to create an intense, organic music that defies category or genre. His music is based in improvised/ experimental music, jazz, free jazz, rock, and noise, yet retains the sense of space and beauty found in traditional Japanese folk music.  Admission is only $5. This event is sponsored by St. Petersburg College, EMIT and the City of St. Petersburg.  The Music Center is located at 6605 Fifth Ave. North in St. Petersburg FL 33710.

Salvador Dali Museum
SWARM!

  

SWARM! occupies the Salvador Dali Museum on Friday, March 30 for an evening of trombonism featuring Dutch trombonist Wolter Weirbos, installation artist Wojtek Sawa and trombonist/composer David Manson.  Swarms of trombones, soloists, illuminated balloons and a tap dancer convert the Salvador Dali Museum into a colony of sound, light and movement with audience participation.

Admission is $10. SWARM! begins at 8 PM at the Salvador Dali Museum.

SWARM! Trombone Workshop
Music Center at St. Petersburg College

Dutch trombonist Wolter Weirbos and David Manson discuss and perform extended techniques for trombone and improvisation.  The workshop is from 1-2:30 PM at the Music Center at St. Petersburg College.  Bring your trombone!  Admission is $10.

Margo Rey & the Helios Jazz Orchestra
NOVA 535 in St. Petersburg

Singer/songwriter sensation Margo Rey performs with her quartet and joins the Helios Jazz Orchestra as vocalist in this very special concert at NOVA 535 on Tuesday, November 15. Margo has performed with many well-respected musicians in the jazz & pop community including Roy Hargrove, James Clay, Cy Coleman, Earl Havin and Earl Klugh. She recently ranked 17th in Billboard.
